Asda's plastic packaging recycling rate will reach 30% by the end of 2020

Asda has increased its commitment to plastics reduction and has set a goal of achieving 30% renewable components in plastic packaging by the end of 2020, five years ahead of the original deadline.

The four major grocery stores said they would avoid using about 19,500 tons of "raw" plastic. It also set a new target to reduce the total amount of plastic used in its own brand packaging by 15% by February 2021.

As part of the innovative approach to Testing and Learning, the company will also experiment with a variety of new refillable and reusable packaging solutions in 2020. Since February 2018, Asda has removed more than 6,500 tons of plastic packaging from its own line of brands, equivalent to the weight of 600 million plastic bottles.

Asda CEO Roger Burnley said: "Removing avoidable plastics and vital disposable plastics is our number one priority and a top priority for our customers."

“Our focus is on removing unnecessary plastics. Where packaging is good for the life of the product, we will try new solutions that are recyclable and recyclable, such as plastic recycling lines.”

To commemorate its other initiatives, Asda scrapped plastic bags for online delivery on July 31, with the goal of saving more than 500 tons of plastic per year.
